CINQUE TERRE │ WHERE TO STAY
Each of the 5 towns making up the national park along the Ligurian Coast has its own distinctive personality. All are more than vacation-worthy, choose one as your ‘home base’ and make use of a train pass to spend your days exploring all that Cinque Terre has to offer. It’s important to note that Monterosso al Mare has a more flat landscape compared to the other four, and is the best choice for those with mobility issues. Be prepared for LOTS of stairs and pack accordingly.
Monterosso al Mare – The largest of the five, Monterosso is known for its sandy beaches and resort-like vibe. Perfect if you love sunbathing, swimming, and a lively seaside promenade with plenty of restaurants and gelaterias. If you want a true “beach”, stay here.
Airbnb Highlight: La Rana e Il Gigante (3 bed, 2 bath) is extra special due to its gorgeous, private, garden dining area and modern finishes that don’t subtract from the historic charm.
Vernazza – Often considered the most picturesque, Vernazza features a tiny harbor, colorful houses, and romantic views. Ideal for travelers seeking charm, photography spots, and cozy evenings. If you want a quaint town with a cove where you can swim and sunbathe on the rocks, stay here.
Airbnb Highlight: Villa Il Conventino (4 bed, 2 bath) is a converted train station with gorgeous sunset views over the rocky bay. It is steps from the coastal hiking trail and just a short stroll into town.
Manarola – Famous for its postcard-worthy harbor and terraced vineyards, Manarola has a romantic, old-world feel. A great fit for couples, wine lovers, and anyone who wants that quintessential Cinque Terre photo backdrop. If you want a more spread out version of Vernazza with bigger rock formations and deeper water for cliff diving, stay here.
Airbnb Highlight: Ca’ De Francu (1 bed, 1 bath) is a luxury apartment with modern touches like an indoor jacuzzi tub. The private rooftop has jaw dropping, panoramic views of Manarola. The perfect honeymoon stay!
Riomaggiore – With its colorful houses cascading down to the sea, Riomaggiore has a youthful, laid-back energy. Although Monterosso is the largest town, Riomaggiore is the largest with the traditional, cliffside charm. If you want a cliffside town with more dining options and vibrant evenings, stay here!
Airbnb Highlight: Villino Caterina (1 bed, 1 bath) fits perfectly with the vibe of Riomaggiore, vibrant with stunning views from the terrace. Hundreds of 5 star reviews really can’t steer you wrong.
Corniglia – Perched high on a cliff, Corniglia is the quietest and least touristy of the towns. With fewer crowds and a more authentic feel, it’s best for those who enjoy slower-paced exploration, and sweeping panoramas. If you want a peaceful, authentic experience perched on a hilltop, stay here.
Airbnb Highlight: La Terrazze (1 bed, 1 bath) is a cozy & rustic apartment perfect for a couple or solo adventurer. The beautiful garden overlooking the valley and sea is the perfect place to unwind after hiking and exploring.

CINQUE TERRE │ EXPERIENCES
While Italy is known for embracing "il dolce far niente", or “the sweetness of doing nothing”, there is plenty to do in Cinque Terre. Make the most of your trip with these experiences…
Boat Charter - See the Ligurian Coast from a different perspective while cruising along the sparkling blue waters. A variety of boat tours are offered at the harbor of each town, like Il Gavitello in Riomaggiore.
Wine Tasting - Sip crisp, mineral-rich whites and the region’s signature Sciacchetrà dessert wine while overlooking terraced vineyards that tumble dramatically into the sea. Cantina Cheo Cinque Terre overlooks beautiful Vernazza.
Swim & Sun Bathe - Bask in the Mediterranean sun on Monterosso‘s sandy beaches, or dry off on the seaside rocks after taking a dip in Vernazza’s bay or cliff jumping into the deep waters of Manarola.
Coastal Hiking - Trek the stunning coastal trails linking Cinque Terre’s colorful villages, where sea views, vineyards, and cliffside paths capture Italy’s timeless charm. Be ready for a relatively long and rigorous hike with lots of stairs! You can always opt to return home on the train. Check out the Vernazza-Monterosso path on All Trails.
Town Hopping - Make sure to spend time in each of the five towns! Parking and car access is limited, so make use of the train and plan for lots of walking and stairs. You can buy a train and/or trekking pass at any of the stations within the park or online.
CINQUE TERRE │ DRINK & DINE
Cinque Terre’s cuisine celebrates the sea and the hills—fresh anchovies, handmade trofie pasta with basil pesto, fried seafood cones, and creamy focaccia di Recco are local must-tries. Pair them with a crisp glass of local white wine.
Ristorante Belforte, Vernazza - Perched on a cliffside fortress in Vernazza, this restaurant has stunning sea views and authentic Ligurian seafood. I highly recommend making a reservation for sunset and request seating on the tower.
Torre Aurora, Monterosso Al Mare - This cocktail bar and restaurant is set in a seaside tower built around the year 1,000 to fight pirate attacks. With a wine cellar and brewery, this is a fantastic spot to enjoy the view while listening to their curated music selection.
Rio Bistrot, Riomaggiore - On the Michelin Guide, this restaurant features local specialties as well as more creative options. Dine in the rustic dining room or on the outdoor terrace for an intimate experience.
Da Artistide, Manarola - Nestled in the heart of town, this restaurant is one of the few where you can enjoy a delicious breakfast to fuel up for your day. The creamy carbonara and bruschetta with burrata & pesto are crowd favorites.
Nessun Dorma, Manarola - This is the place for aperitivo (Italy’s version of happy hour). Wind down with a refreshing drink, bruschetta, platter, or salad. Note that you need to get their app to join the waitlist. They also offer a fun Pesto Experience for lunch, which you can book ahead on the website.
