Guide to Summer in Puerto Rico
I know, I know, if you Google “When is the best time to visit Puerto Rico?”, summer isn’t the top answer… BUT stick with me for a moment. If you’re a flexible traveler who loves deals and the Caribbean, a summer vacation on the Isla del Encanto is a great choice. Keep reading for the experiences and benefits that are only available June through August and tips that will help address any concerns you might have about “hurricane season” - which is not nearly as wet or scary as it sounds.
FLAMBOYAN TREES IN BLOOM
One of Puerto Rico’s most stunning and iconic summer sights are the island’s flamboyan trees, known for their fiery red-orange flowers. They burst into color between late May and August, decorating the roads where they were planted to provide shade for those traveling on horseback.
If you’re road tripping across the island, which I highly recommend, you’ll definitely get a chance to admire the summer blooms. If you are sticking close to San Juan, take a stroll in Parque Luis Muñoz Rivera. This would be a great stop for after an Old San Juan Walking Tour.
RIPE QUENEPAS - THE ULTIMATE BEACH SNACK
Quenepas, also known as Spanish limes, are a beloved tropical fruit found throughout Puerto Rico during the summer months. These small green fruits have a thin skin with sweet-and-tangy flesh wrapped around a large seed. Imagine a natural, healthy jawbreaker candy. During peak season, visitors will spot local vendors selling bunches of freshly picked quenepas along highways and beaches. This fun, refreshing snack is part of the Puerto Rican summer experience! If you’re a foodie at heart and want to taste more of Puerto Rico, check out this Old Town Foodie Tour.
TINY TURTLE HATCHLINGS
Puerto Rico’s beaches are nesting grounds for endangered sea turtles that usually hatch from June through August. Local volunteer groups help guide the tiny turtles safely toward the ocean while protecting them from predators and artificial lights. If you’re lucky enough, you might get to witness this adorable site! You can increase your chances by taking beach walks at dawn or dusk while keeping an eye out for activity near the protected nests marked with yellow caution tape.
Although I can’t guarantee you’ll get to see hatchlings, there’s a very high chance of swimming with sea turtles if you snorkel at Escambron Beach. This snorkeling tour will provide you with the gear, show you exactly where to spot turtles, and includes video!
BUDGET FRIENDLY & TRANQUIL
Red Flamboyan blooms, ripe quenepas, and tiny turtles aren’t the only reason to plan a Puerto Rican vacation during the summer months, you also get a much quieter and budget friendly experience.
Booking.com is a great tool for finding travel deals, and you’ll usually find the best ones in the off season. Just put in your ideal dates and destination, they’ll do the deal hunting for you. You get to enjoy the same beautiful beaches, food, and experiences as peak season - minus the crowds and at a fraction of the cost. That’s a win win.

WET SEASON - NO PROBLEM
Summer in the Caribbean is considered low tourist season for a reason. Warmer temperatures lead to less stable weather, causing more rain and a higher chance that a big storm will pass through. However, there is still plenty of sunshine to be enjoyed, and you can’t experience a rainbow without some rain!
These 7 tips will help you manage your risk and make the most of your vacation, despite the wetter weather…
Rent a car. This gives you freedom to drive to another part of the island and easily adjust your plans. It might be raining in San Juan, but not that gorgeous beach in Fajardo just 1 hour away!
Have realistic expectations. It will likely rain at some point each day. If your weather app forecasts rain, don’t panic, there’s usually a regular mix of sun and rain. Sometimes all it takes is sheltering inside for 20 minutes while the rain rolls through, then you’re back to exploring!
Track the weather. If a bad storm system is approaching the island, this is forecasted on the National Hurricane Center website 7 days ahead of time. As your trip gets closer, pay attention and let it guide your decision making. And of course while on island, stay safe and heed all weather and marine warnings from local officials.
Book flexible or cancelable fares. When it comes to major expenses like flights, hotels, and tours, it helps when you can adjust or cancel should the weather not cooperate.
Pack smart and embrace the rain. Bring an umbrella, rain jacket, and shoes that can get wet. Don’t let the rain keep you from living your best life.
Make the most of the morning. Skies are typically clearest before the afternoon showers roll in. If you can, get an early start and plan to soak in the sunshine before noon.
Plan activities that can be enjoyed even with a little rain. See the next section for ideas!

Enjoy a delicious cocktail at the Ron del Barrilito Distillery and learn more about the spirit that is beloved by the people of Puerto Rico, rum.

There’s a lot to do in and around El Yunque National Rain Forest, just 45 minutes from the city, including hikes to natural waterslides, zip-lining, horse-back riding, ATVing, and more!
